Electric Vehicle 4 Solar

To directly charge your EV with solar energy, you will need to add a Powerwall or a comparable battery to your Solar System.

Powerwall 2.0 or any other Battery can supply your electric vehicle with stored solar energy via your home's electrical panel, but it doesn't directly connect to your charging equipment.

Charging Threshold

The charging threshold allows you to manage your domestic and vehicular energy requirements, giving you total command over your energy environment. The 'Settings' screen on the Tesla app lets you adjust this threshold for your home. The charging threshold controls how much energy the Powerwall can distribute to your vehicle, instructing it to cease vehicle charging once it discharges below a specified percentage. Allocating more of Powerwall's stored power to your vehicle could reduce the potential backup time for your home.

SOLAR + Powerwall 2.0 or Battery

The Powerwall 2.0 or Felicity battery offers energy storage for future use, and when paired with solar power, it delivers vital security and financial advantages. Each Battery system comes equipped with features like energy monitoring, metering, and customizable smart controls accessible through the Tesla app. The system learns your energy consumption patterns over time and receives wireless updates to improve current features and introduce new ones.

Maximizing the value of your system can be best achieved by combining Powerwall and solar, which lets you utilize solar energy both day and night. Powerwall+ provides a comprehensive, integrated solution for new setups, offering entire home backup with solar. Meanwhile, existing solar systems can be integrated with Powerwall.Powerwall's compatibility with conventional inverters found in home energy systems is due to its AC-coupled nature. For dependable performance during power outages, one Powerwall is needed for every 7.6 kW AC of solar incorporated into the backup circuit.

As the sun rises, the house begins to draw power from solar energy.

If the home needs more power than what's available, it can tap into the utility-grid.

During daylight hours, when solar panels generate surplus electricity, Powerwall charges itself. It then stores this energy for later use when solar production ceases at night or during utility grid outages. With Tesla's system, you receive notifications via their app whenever there's a change in your Powerwall system status like a disruption in the utility grid. The following day when sunlight returns, Powerwall recharges using solar energy - thus maintaining a continuous cycle of clean and renewable energy. Note that you will be able to do the same with a different Battery system and the Enphase app.

Solar & Battery Integration

Solar integration for charging an EV

When your home is solar-powered and your vehicle is charging during sunlight hours, any excess solar energy will be divided between the Powerwall and your vehicle after the Powerwall reaches its pre-set energy limit. This method of utilizing surplus solar power enhances the efficiency of your solar setup, even in a power outage. As long as there's extra solar energy, the Powerwall will maintain its energy level at the set limit. When this surplus depletes, it automatically stops charging your vehicle and starts powering your home. The 'Charge on Solar' feature allows you to charge your Tesla using excess clean energy from your system. It lets you dedicate a portion of your vehicle's battery to charge exclusively on surplus solar, ensuring peak efficiency charging.
